The legend of Alcyone

The ancient Greek legend of Alcyone tells of her deep love for her husband, Ceyx. After Ceyx drowned at sea, Alcyone was overcome with grief.

Moved by their love, the gods transformed them into halcyon birds, allowing them to be together again. The gods also calmed the sea for a period each winter, called the "halcyon days," so Alcyone could nest peacefully.
